2027 County Budget Adoption
The Council set the 2027 budget essentially flat against 2026 and approved a 4% across-the-board raise, costing roughly $4 million against a ~$100 million payroll. The number isn't final — first reading is Tuesday and second reading follows an October workshop, and departments in negotiations or reorganizations are carved out.
Data center ordinance rewrite
Residents warned that data centers, solar farms and battery sites are steadily converting rural farmland to industrial use, and asked for independent studies of the impacts before more projects move forward.
Hanover Tile reconstruction and $1.4M property assessments
The county wants to replace a failing 1886-era tile drain, and the bill would fall hardest on a handful of landowners — some facing six-figure assessments. Residents say the cost is unaffordable and that Illinois runoff, raised roads and county highway culverts made the flooding worse. The board put off any decision to September 16 and wants more information on those outside contributions.
Sentinel data center rezoning in Eagle Creek Township
The council rezoned farmland for a data center and a battery storage facility, both over community objections and one without a Plan Commission recommendation. Residents fear health effects, dried wells, noise and lost farmland; officials point to the special exception process and county ordinances as remaining safeguards.
Jail staffing crisis and stalled correctional officer contract talks
Correctional officers and their union say the county hasn't sent anyone with real authority to negotiate their contract, which expired at the end of 2025. They describe being about 70 officers short, working forced 16-hour shifts, and facing dangerous overcrowding — including an attempted stabbing and inmates housed above bed capacity. Commissioners promised to have attorneys research who actually holds bargaining authority.
